Do the math on what not answering in time costs you. A client writes at 9 PM asking about a product. Nobody replies until the next day. By then, they bought somewhere else. That happens dozens of times a month, and you don't see it because the client simply never comes back.
An AI assistant closes that leak. It answers instantly, at any hour, trained on your business. Here's what it really is — no hype — what it does, what it doesn't, and how it gets built. I'm Anthony Hunt; I build these systems for Latino businesses in Puerto Rico and the United States.
What an AI assistant is (and is NOT)
An AI assistant is an agent that converses with your clients using artificial intelligence, trained on your business's information.
The key word is converses. It's not a rule-based chatbot — the "press 1 for sales, press 2 for support" kind — that breaks the moment a client types anything unexpected. An AI assistant understands natural language: the client asks like they'd ask a person, and the assistant answers with YOUR information, finds the product, gives the price and walks them to the purchase.
The difference in practice:
- Rule chatbot: "I didn't understand. Press 1, 2 or 3." → the client gets frustrated and leaves.
- AI assistant: "Sure — the pulley kit for that model is $45. Here's the link to buy it 👉 [link]. Anything else I can help with?" → the client buys.
The 2 types: chat and voice
There are two ways an AI assistant serves clients. They work separately or together.
The chat assistant
Handles text across all your channels from one place:
- WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook — where clients already message you.
- Your website and Shopify store — installed with a snippet.
What it does:
- Answers product and service questions instantly.
- When a client asks about something, it searches your inventory and returns the name, price and buy link.
- Captures the client's name and contact for follow-up.
- When a conversation needs a person, it hands off to your team.
The voice assistant
Answers the phone and talks naturally with the client:
- Gives prices by voice and answers product questions.
- During the call, sends the buy link by WhatsApp to the client's number.
- Transfers the call to a manager when needed.
- Available 24/7, so no call is ever lost.
It's more advanced technology than chat, so it needs more configuration and a testing period before going live.
A real example
Picture a scooter parts store. A client writes on WhatsApp: "looking for a pulley kit for a Tank 200."
The assistant:
- Understands they want a specific part for a specific model.
- Asks for the model if needed, searches the inventory.
- Replies with the part's name, price and buy link.
- Saves the client's contact.
- If the client has a question it can't resolve, it hands off to a person.
All of that at 11 PM, with nobody on the team awake. That sale used to be lost; now it's captured.
Key requirement: for the assistant to match a part to a model or vehicle, that information must be in the product description. The assistant is only as good as the data you train it on. Part of the job is getting your inventory ready so it answers well.
What it does NOT do (to be honest)
So there are no surprises:
- It doesn't process payment inside the chat. It sends the client to your store's link to buy there. It answers, gives the price and sends the link — the charge happens in your store or Shopify.
- It answers with the information it's been given. If a product isn't in the inventory or lacks a description, the assistant says so or hands off to a person. It doesn't make things up.
- It doesn't replace human judgment. It handles the repetitive volume; delicate or complex conversations go to your team.
An honest AI assistant doesn't promise to do everything alone. It promises to serve, answer and capture — 24/7 — so you close.
What businesses is it for?
Any business that answers the same questions all day:
- Stores with inventory (parts, products): "do you have this and how much?"
- Service businesses: prices, availability, booking.
- Clinics, restaurants, real estate, automotive and more.
If your team spends hours answering "how much?" and "is it in stock?", an assistant can take that — and your people focus on closing.
Free chatbot vs. a real AI assistant
You'll see "free chatbot" tools. Watch the difference:
- Free chatbots are usually rule-based: fixed buttons, canned replies, easily broken. They don't know your inventory and can't truly converse.
- An AI assistant trained on your business understands, searches, gives real prices and drives the sale. It's the difference between an automated menu and a salesperson working 24/7.
One saves you an app; the other makes you sales. (To go deeper, read free WhatsApp chatbot vs AI and AI agent vs rule chatbot.)
How it's built (in phases)
Building an assistant that actually works takes about a month, in phases:
- Discovery and training: we connect your inventory, prices and links.
- Phase 1 — Chat (weeks 1-2): we build and test the chat assistant on your channels.
- Phase 2 — Voice (weeks 3-4): we configure and test the call assistant.
- Delivery and monitoring: both running, with continuous tuning and support.
What we need from you: access to your Facebook and Instagram accounts, your business's WhatsApp number, access to your site/Shopify store for the snippet, and the phone number for the voice assistant.
How much does it cost?
It depends on whether you want chat only, voice only, or the full package, and on your business's volume. There's no one-size number — I quote it per case. What I will say: compared to what you lose in sales by not answering in time, an assistant that serves 24/7 pays for itself.
